"Fine Creil Earthenware Toilet Set Circa 1803 Mourning At The Herborisation Queen"
Toiletry set including an ewer and its basin. Manufacture of Creil around 1803. Specific decoration of the fine earthenware of Creil called Herborisation or Mourning to the Queen. It is believed that the name "Mourning to the Queen" comes from the fact that this model was created in memory of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette and that between the herborizations - which passed for being weeping willows - hid the profiles of the king and queen... like seditious objects. This decoration is the result of a curious process where the decorator dropped drops of brown or green mixed with tobacco essence or better still urine onto the still wet green clay. He then moved the room in all directions to produce kinds of leaves and large grasses that branched out on the body or around the object. Excellent condition. Little wear. A micro scratch
