"Tribal Arts Trobriand Islands Oceania Papuasia New-guinéa Lime Spatulas Carved Wood Dated 1871/1874"
ETHNOGRAPHY-FOLK ART-EARLY ARTS OCEANIA PAPUA NEW GUINEA TROBRIAND ISLANDS 1871/1874 Carved and engraved wooden lime spatulas, dated 1871 and 1874, from the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea, Oceania. It is probably a work of popular art of sailors (or settlers), but not of natives; the lack of control in the execution seems to indicate it to us; but it is inspired by in situ production, not without charm and interest, ethnographic in particular. Presence of Christian crosses on the top of the spatulas, at the level of the hook perforations. Posterior cords. Very good condition (a crack on one; see descriptive photos). Fawn to brown patinas. Weight for both: 171 grams. 1871: 47cm 1874: 45cm.
