Bas-relief In Alabaster ''la Cène'' - Monogram Ve - Mechelen XVII°

Alabaster plaque carved with gold highlights illustrating ''the Last Supper'', term given by the Christian religion to the last meal that Jesus Christ took on Maundy Thursday with his twelve apostles before his arrest and crucifixion.
Among the Twelve Apostles are easily identifiable:
In the foreground, Judas holding in his right hand the purse with thirty pieces of silver. In the iconography, the purse of Judas represents not only his office as treasurer within the community of the apostles, but also and above all the wages of his betrayal.
To the left of Christ, John the Evangelist with a gentle and almost feminine face, and to the right of Christ Saint Peter, a massive and aged character, with a tonsured skull, and wearing a short, thick beard.
A loaf of bread, a piglet, a cup and a knife are placed on the altar, while the composition is supported by an architectural background crowned by a canopy in high relief and wrapped in large knots.
This plate is monogrammed VE for the workshop of Lievin Van Egom (Mechelen – Early 17th century)
