Félix Moschelès was born in a jewish family from german origin settled in London. He was the son of a famous pianist and composer, Ignaz Moschelès, friend of Félix Mendelssohn. At the time he realised this painting, the family had moved to Leipzig where Ignaz Moschelès was engaged to teach music in the School of Music recently created by Mendelssohn.
Félix Moschelès was a peace activist and advocate of esperanto. He studied painting with Jozef Van Lerius. Moscheles had a studio in Chelsea, London : n° 123 Upper Church Street on the corner of Elm Park Road was built in 1894 for Felix Moscheles.
