Document Case Of The City Of Dijon Around 1820 flag

Object description :

"Document Case Of The City Of Dijon Around 1820"
  Description:
Iron sheet with embossed patterns, painted and gilded.
The object consists of a tube in the shape of a quiver, it closes with a bayonet lid. In the lower body there is a thin tube fixed to the wall to carry the pens or pencils.
The cover has a double bottom opening with a trap door for writing accessories (travel inkwell, powder, pen sharpener, etc.). Two rings as on a gun indicate that this object (large enough: 96 cm) was worn over the shoulder.
A solid little molded bronze foot made it possible to place it upright against a wall without the painted sheet metal of the lower edge wearing out.
The two ends are decorated with friezes and beaded in relief, and a rosette on the edges of the ends, also pushed back.
The ground color is a dark wine.
The arms of Dijon are painted on the enlarged upper part and adorned with a pattern of gilded nails on a red background.
Vines run along the long length of the case as a reminder of the Dijonnaise coat of arms (heraldry: with golden vine stocks).
Napoleon I gave coats of arms to cities, whereas only 40 of them could be represented before the King by their Mayor during the old regime.
Its shape is also inspired by morocco cases which also contained documents. Its shoulder strap made it easy to carry when traveling in the city, even on horseback, it was also rainproof, which is essential for ink and paper.
The use of this case is therefore directly linked to the cartographic exercise of the city of Dijon.
This very rare object is very probably the card holder and writing desk of a cadastral engineer, there were for example Messrs. Berthaux, Durand, De Saint Priest and Busset between 1809 and 1834.
