The Ninth Wave, 19th Century Inscribed to IVAN AIVAZOVSKY (1817-1900) Large 19th Century view of castaways at sea, oil on canvas inscribed to Ivan Aivazovsky. Excellent quality and condition scene capturing the beauty and destructive nature of the sea with characters desperate for salvation as part of Aivazovsky's Christian metaphor. Other versions of the scene were painted by Aivazovsky but usually at sunset where here the composition was changed to the first light of morning.
