19th century rug in wool on wool, Turkish knot, beige natural wool warp, red wool weft at one end. Good condition, to say very good condition for this artifact from the middle of the 19th century. "S" symbol of God for Christians, invite us to think that this carpet is of Armenian origin because these designs are not knotted by Muslims.
These "S" are also in this culture the symbol of the beneficial dragon in all the life of the man and very present in the Christian Caucasus.
We find this geometric composition in the Gandja region located SW of Kazak (100 kms).
Gandja is at the crossroads of Russia, Turkey and Iran. We also find this decoration with a lot of resemblance in the ancient work of the tribes of Beluchistan, which is to say the difficulty of identifying certain Caucasian carpets that most merchants designate under the generic term Kazak.
The central cross medallion is of Armenian tradition, imported by emigrants in the new regions where they settled.
Our model of Armenian Christian invoice is mounted in wool on wool, which encourages us to orient its birth close to the green and mountainous areas of the Caucasus. A wool-on-wool knot is located further inland and deeper into the Caucasian lands than a cotton knot.
The colors used, they also bring us closer to this region, the blues and the terracotta red are shades that we find in the tradition of the Kazak as well as the outline in white tone which allows the reading of the piece.
We find this piece, the following archaic symbols: combs, stylized flowers, birds, trees of life, and the S;
Note the quality, colors and designs of the border. This carpet is in its discovery state, normal wear on a piece of this age which has not undergone restoration.
