Object description :

"Richard Meier "swid Powell" For Cleto Munari, Pair Of Candelabras In Silver Bronze, 1983"
Pair of "Swid Powell" candlesticks by Richard Meier, in silvered bronze called alpaca. Limited edition edition by Maison Cleto Munari in Italy, irreproachable quality and quite heavy. Signature and stamp under the candelabra. In a perfect state. This important project by Meier was originally a design for a mantel clock which was never made, later reworked to achieve this candelabrum shape. Unlike Meier's King Richard candlestick, which was made in large numbers, these candelabra are very difficult to find. Similar models appear in particular in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the High Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery... Bibiography: Tapert, Annette. SWID POWELL: Objects by Architects, Rizzoli, 1990. The original drawing and a photo of this piece can also be found on Richard Meier's website. Biography: Peter Richard Alan Meier (born 1934 in New Jersey, USA) is an American architect and abstract artist. Once his degree from Cornell University in his pocket, he visited Italy, Greece, Israel, France, Germany, he then worked at Skidmore then for Marcel Breuer. It was not until 1963 that he created his agency "Richard Meier & Partners" in New York. In parallel with his activity as an architect, he taught at the Cooper Union (1962-1973), at Yale (1975-1977) then at Harvard (1980-1981). Richard Meier is the author of several private houses including the famous "Douglas House" in Harbor Springs (1973). His work on light, white color, space and form brings him closer to Le Corbusier, but also to the Viennese Secession Art Nouveau (Josef Hoffmann - Wiener Werkstätte) often confused with Art Deco. Cleto Munari is an internationally renowned company born in Italy in 1970 with the production and edition of design objects created by the greatest names in architecture such as Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass.
