Influenced by his master, Nicolas Charlet, François-Hippolyte Lalaisse registered his illustrations in the romantic movement. He is also known in the field of ethnography for his representation of Breton and Norman costumes. The painter became a drawing teacher at the Ecole Polytechnique, while participating in the Salon de peinture et de sculpture de Paris from 1845.
He also illustrated many works on horses, such as L'Atlas statistics de la production des chevals en France (1850), the fruit of his collaboration with Eugène Gayot, director of the Haras du Pin (1840-1843) who later became Inspector General of the stud farms in charge of their management.
