Born in Liverpool in 1861, Ernest Bucknall was educated at Dulwich College. He studied art at Lambeth and South Kensington Academies, where in 1876 he won the Queen's Prize for Perspective.
He specialized in watercolor landscapes, exhibiting at the Royal Academy of London, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
In 1919, he moved to Gloucester Road, Bristol, and was elected artist member of the Savages at the age of 58. In 1924, he published an article in "Grouse" on the charms of English rural architecture.
He died in June 1935.
