According to Wikipedia: Code Louis: This legal development is linked to the desire to put the laws and jurisdictions of the kingdom of France in order. The South of this kingdom was governed by Roman-canonical law, known as “written law”, and the North by customary law. The Louis code was drawn up under the direction of Colbert from 1661, and the project was presented to the king in 1665. In 1667, the ordinance of Saint-Germain-en-Laye codified civil justice. The thirty-five articles deal mainly with the hierarchy of the different courts, the discipline of magistrates and groom the procedure. They also modify the rules relating to civil status, thus constituting an important stage in the construction of the State in France. In 1670, the criminal ordinance codified criminal justice. We maintain, according to the spirit of the time, the question, the galleys and the death penalty. It was recorded by Parliament in the presence of the King and was to form the first part of a code which was never realized. In 1806, it will be used for the Code of Civil Procedure.
