Dionysus Drunk On His Panther Supported By Two Fauns 1780-1820

Description :
Chiseled bronze, brown patina, grey Italian marble.

This group, Italian work of the Grand Tour therefore represents Dionysos as a child precariously balanced due to drunkenness on his panther. Two small fauns embraced the young God support him to protect him from a fall.
The scene, dense with detail and movement, is treated in the antique style; There are details and peculiarities of design that will disappear in French or neoclassical bronzes.
Besides, this theme of Dioysos with his panther is found little treated in statuary, whereas it is often found in antiquity in mosaics, on pottery…. This theme is treated relatively closely by a statue by Gaspard Marsy (1624-1681) and Balthazar Marsy (1628-1674) in a pool at Versailles.
(Fauna playing with a panther on ground strewn with grapes.
The panther and the characters wear bells which we understand that they accompanied the dances of the bacchanalia, the features of the faces and of the panther are more austere than on the scenes of Clodion for example. The drawing and carving are nevertheless of a beautiful "lively" and detailed quality.
The protagonists come alive on a very naturalistic terrace, strewn with fallen vines fallen from a harvest basket, with their scattered grapes.
The group rests on a posterior base of gray marble surrounded by large moldings, as very often the original base was broken or separated from the group.
State :
Excellent condition, beautiful patina. Marble base intact.
The patina is more brown visually but to describe the details in the photo, it is necessary to slightly overexpose, the marble is also a darker gray.
A photo in situation presents the real color of the patina.
