The Klapperstein torture was introduced in Mulhouse and its region to replace stoning. The Klapperstein is a 9 to 12 kg stone used as a punishment for the acts of those who "cackle" (from "klappern", to cackle). Those found guilty had to ride through the town with the heavy stone hanging around their necks on a donkey to show everyone that their words had been judged as false by the courts. The Klapperstein was an infamous punishment intended primarily to punish backbiting women. The Klapperstein was not abolished until 1798 when Mulhouse was reunited with France.
