This sword is made in the 19th century, but given the extreme rarity of authentic "katzbalgers" and the near impossibility of hoping to see a 2-handed 16th century lansquenet sword appear on the market, it is of interest. certain.
BLADE: It is a long double-edged blade with a middle groove of about 30 cm. In this groove, on each side, we find the inscription “- P . O. V. G. M. H. I. B. + . This inscription probably evokes a Latin motto, but it is risky to specify which one... We could risk with a few mistakes and barbarisms "Pater Omnipotens Viris Genitor, Maria Hospedet In Beatis" = Almighty Father, creator of men, Maria welcomes the blessed, but this interpretation is without any guarantee. If one of my readers has a better idea, I welcome it!
At the base of the blade, on each side is a punch: On one side representation of a stylized castle, and on the other a small pattern that I have trouble interpreting: perhaps a tower and a wave , or a curious letter "S" ??
Blade length = 103 cm, Width near the guard = 4.5 cm, Thickness near the guard = 0.8 cm, Balance point = 10 cm from the guard
GUARD: This is the typical "8" shaped guard lansquenet weapons. It is twisted and the quillons end in a ball, also twisted.
POMMEL : It has the typical fluted mushroom shape, as on the Katzalbalgers. It is surmounted by a small protuberance on which the silk is riveted. GRIP : It is twisted, and covered with metal wire. Ferrules in iron rings.
This entire sword is in its original dark patina. It's possible to restore it to a much shinier look with a little cleaning, but I chose to leave it in its uncovered state.
