Large oval miniature on ivory representing a young man in half-length and three-quarter length standing out against a monochrome gray background. This young man wears a navy blue jacket whose buttons have an animal motif. The jacket opens on a white shirt. A knot is tied at the collar. Appears to the left of the character a coat of arms with black and gray stripes surmounted by a crown of marquis. The miniature is set in a wooden frame and protected by a curved glass. Miniature signed F… Bernard active around 1824 -1850. Artist of a very good know-how, close to the style of Madame de Mirbel. This is a portrait of Charles Alfred Marquis de Boisthierry (1824-1890) and dated 1845. He was under Prefect of the territory of Belfort from January 1849 to July 1850, then under Prefect in Clermont de l'Oise, and finally Saint Denis in 1852. The family then owned the castle of Château Renault near Tours. This portrait was given on his birthday by his wife Hélène, Mary Butler Fellowes (1822-1877). daughter of the very famous Captain William Dorset Fellowes whose portrait painted on ivory is today in the Royal Museum of Greenwich.
