"Ghent 1788, Louis XVI Candlestick Sterling Silver, Nicolas Viette"
Lovely Louis XVI period candlestick in solid silver with the hallmarks of the city of Ghent for the year 1788. It is also stamped with the master goldsmith's hallmark of Nicolas Viette, goldsmith from Mons who, like many goldsmiths and apprentices from Mons, emigrated to Flemish towns. Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and even Terremonde had quite a few montois membres in their goldsmith guilds. He arrived in Ghent at the age of 30 in 1763 and became a citizen of the city in 1772 and became a master in 1773 with a stoup. No less than four of his sons served their apprenticeship in his workshop. With its 29 cm high, it is rather large for its time. It weighs 310 grams.
