Beautiful painting by Georges Feldkirchner Signed lower right of the canvas and dated 12-1941 / Oil on painted canvas and frame painted in trompe l'oeil. This canvas was probably produced during his numerous study sessions at the Cirque. The canvas has been restored (see photos) The dimensions of the frame are: 79x64cm The dimensions of the canvas are: 64x49cm Biographical details Very little is known about the life of Georges Feldkirchner. He was born in America in 1885, but moved to Paris, where he had a studio in Montmartre. He worked as a painter, book illustrator and sculptor, but he is best known for his studies of wild animals, done at Cirque Amar and Cirque Pinder from the late 1920s to the late 1940s. Cirque Amar had was founded in Algeria in the 1860s and spawned a second branch in Paris in the late 1920s. It included all kinds of animals, even polar bears, so it was a boon for artists.
