"Rare Mahogany Spinning Wheel"
Rare mahogany spinning wheel resting on four small feet supporting a circular base on which stand four fluted shafts supporting the rich and complex attributes of the spinning wheel. It is activated by a pedal connected to the wheel by a connecting rod-crank system. The spinning wheel is decorated with gilt bronze nets in a row of pearls emphasizing the lines of the wheel and the base. Louis XVI period Usual restorations H. 87 x W. 37 x D. 34 cm The Palace of Versailles still retains a spinning wheel reputed to have belonged to Queen Marie-Antoinette (V.5148), which bears witness to the sewing activities prized in the highest circles of society. We will notice the subtle play of the gilt bronze rods in a pearl row which underlines the finesse of the object, with a very feminine taste. Used to spin wool or hemp, it is an inseparable accessory in the life of a hostess. It appeared in the 18th century, replacing the spindle hitherto used.
