The tranquil atmosphere of the Var seaside and the fishermen in their boats at daybreak at the start of the 20th century. A nervous touch and a perfect design give life to this large oil on canvas by the Toulon artist Paul Levéré (1875-1949). The work represents fishermen busying themselves on a shore, certainly around Cap Brun in Toulon where the artist used to live. It is offered in a simple, golden and modern frame which measures 75 cm by 111.5 cm and 65 cm by 100 for the canvas alone. In good condition, it is signed lower right. He painted landscapes of Provence and the Mediterranean Riviera. He was appointed member of the commission of fine arts of Toulon, then professor at the school of fine arts of this city. he collaborated in the artistic magazine La Provence illustrée Working in a post-impressionist style, he is influenced by Pierre Bonnard. The mural fresco he had painted in the hall of the Sud France station in Toulon was saved when the building was demolished, after the bombings of 1944, in order to be kept in the museum of Old Toulon. Works in public collections
