Object description :

"A Louis XV Provençale Commod Early 18th Century Circa 1740"
Provençal chest of drawers in carved, molded and waxed solid light walnut wood. With a curved rectangular quadrilateral shape, it opens with two superimposed drawers which perfectly match the curve of the frame. Both receiving an equally generous and elegant work of large and deep moldings in the form of three polylobed cartouches, in squares for the middle part, long ones at the ends. Each is decorated with gilded bronzes typical of Provençal chests of drawers from the beginning of the 18th century. An ovoid plaque topped with a plume, flanked symmetrically with acanthus interlacing on a cul-de-lampe in foliated fleuron, all centered with a strongly marked keyhole, for the middle cartouche. Two heavy drop handles with facets and cut sides on cylindrical eyelets with fillets for those on the sides. As it should be in Provençal cabinetmaking, the lower crosspiece is of course entirely perforated, there in an asymmetrical way with fire flowers, interlacing, acanthus and foliage. The uprights are straight, quadrilateral punctuated with windings perched on a small hoof for the hindquarters; in an arc raised by large and fat moldings treated as salient elegies for the anteriors. This is punctuated by fine, sleek feet with shoulders adorned with protruding beribboned rockeries, as fine as they are nervous, punctuated by deep and opulent scrolls perched on small hooves. Each of the sides is centered by a large asymmetrical cartouche with elongated vertically and laterally sinuous flowerbeds. The whole is topped with a monoxyl wooden top where runs around the periphery a refined corbin beak in the lower part of a groove in order to purify the visual. This very specific work of Provençal fustier masters gives this type of chest of drawers all its letters of nobility; we find there the exuberance of the south combined with the theatrical taste of an all Italian magnificence. Observation: it should be noted the quality of the choice of walnut used, a heart of walnut in son, with dense, very tight grains almost devoid of veins, associated both with the quality of the bronzes and the finesse of their carving, everything we indicates the financial well-being of the sponsor who did not skimp on the expense for this ceremonial piece of furniture devoted to a reception room. In addition, the old patina of the natural wood allows you to appreciate all the sculptor's gouge strokes, which it highlights. Very particular work of Provençal master fustiers from the Louis XV period of the first part of the 18th century, around 1740. Dimensions: Length 127cm, Depth 65cm and Height 92cm.
