"Tobacco Box For Dutch Market, Precious Nagasaki Lacquer, 19th Century"
Dutch-shaped snuff box for pipe tobacco, rectangular, fully lacquered brass with thick black background,  mother-of-pearl inlay and transparent mother-of-pearl shavings, featuring an idyllic garden of flowers, birds and butterflies, in the famous "Raden" technique , (Painting under the surface of the inlaid mother-of-pearl.)
Typical Nagasaki work, Edo period, 1800–1850,. Similar boxes are visible and described thus in Tokyo Museum: Tobacco and Salt Museum. “Allready early 17th century there was export of Japanese Export lacquer to Europe. These export lacquer was made on command of the Dutch VOC , At the end of 18th century they started to make also tobacco boxes from lacquer on metal, with various European and Japanese designs. These tobacco boxes you can now find in the Tokyo in the Tobacco and Salt Museum. »
Dimensions: 12.5cm x 7cm x 2cm. good condition, one trace of wear, two small lacks of black lacquer on  angles. (red arrows). Take a good look at our photos.
