"Eugène De Barbériis (1851-1937) Peasant Woman On The Var Coast"
Bucolic life around the Var coast in the 19th century. Warm and soothing colors for this pretty work by the Marseille painter Eugène de Barbériis. The work is presented in a beautiful 19th century channeled gilt frame which measures 44 cm by 53 cm and 24 cm by 33 cm for the panel alone. It represents a peasant woman collecting wood in a seaside landscape, with an island in the background, certainly around Bandol where the artist used to live. In good condition, it is signed lower left. Pupil of Bouguerreau, Tony Robert-Fleury, Detaille and Berne-Bellecour, Eugène de Barbériis exhibited at the Salon of French artists from 1878 to 1901. In his early days, he mainly presented subjects showing the daily life of soldiers: "on duty, December" in 1890, "A chore" in 1892, "Egarés" 1893, "Fraternité" 1894. The Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille preserves "Amour et Patrie" from him. He moved back to Marseilles in 1890 and turned to landscape painting. In 1912, he showed 80 canvases illustrating the city of Marseille and its surroundings at the Galerie Centrale d'art moderne de Marseille.
