"Pair Of Art Deco Caned Country Chairs"
Superb pair of chairs from the art deco period. These chairs, in walnut, are a perfect mix of styles. Indeed, the caned seat clearly takes the form of the chairs that were found in farms and countryside from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. Caning was a material particularly often used on this type of chair. The backrest, square and straight, with 4 bars, is of the "modern" style of the art deco period. The front legs take up, at their end, a form of plant stem reminiscent of art nouveau, a style inspired by nature; the back legs have a saber shape, like most chairs from the Directoire and Restoration period. These chairs are like a challenge that the craftsman would have set himself, mixing styles from several centuries, and the result is quite remarkable. They are in very good general condition, with of course traces of life and a few wormholes, but they are very solid and stable. A treatment has been applied and they have been protected with an antique wax. The caning is in remarkable condition, with a few small gaps here and there, but nothing that interferes with their use. These chairs will look great around a small table, or in an office, why not!
