"Eugène De Barbériis (1851-1937) Provençal Landscape With Goats"
Always warm and soothing colors and always bucolic life in Provence at the end of the 19th century for this pretty work by the Marseille painter Eugène de Barbériis. The work is presented in a beautiful 19th century gilt frame which measures 44 cm by 52 cm and 24 cm by 33 cm for the panel alone. It represents two goats in a landscape near a railway bridge, certainly around Sanary where the artist lived and where he had his habits. In very good condition, it is signed lower left. Pupil of Bouguerreau, Tony Robert-Fleury, Detaille and Berne-Bellecour, Eugène de Barbériis exhibited at the Salon of French artists from 1878 to 1901. In his early days, he mainly presented subjects showing the daily life of soldiers: "on duty, December" in 1890, "A chore" in 1892, "Egarés" 1893, "Fraternité" 1894. The Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille preserves "Amour et Patrie" from him. He moved back to Marseilles in 1890 and turned to landscape painting. In 1912, he showed 80 canvases illustrating the city of Marseille and its surroundings at the Galerie Centrale d'art moderne de Marseille.
