Description: An oil painting on panel from the early 19th century, this masterpiece is signed by H.P. Parker. It portrays a captivating interior scene taken from the famous novel "The Heart of Midlothian" by Walter Scott, an epic work published in four volumes in 1818. The title of the book refers to the Edinburgh prison in the Scottish county of Midlothian.
The painting is a refined piece of art, characterized by an extremely pronounced chromatic contrast, with intense colors that make the scene vivid and well-illuminated compared to the background. The subjects are skillfully painted, expressive, and perfectly proportioned. The details are meticulously executed, including the elements of the ceiling and the objects in shadow on the floor, a typical feature of Flemish art.
On the back of the painting, a long inscription in English provides a detailed description of the episode the artist drew from the novel. Moreover, from the back, it can be inferred that the painting belonged to prestigious institutions like an English bank, which adds even greater value to it, as it suggests that it was considered a work of great importance to be kept in such esteemed places.
