"Fireplace Napoléon III In Brèche De Violet And Carrara Marble, Ca. 1860"
Probably the best antique fireplace in my collection. An exceptional fireplace made out of the highly valued Brèche de Violet and Carrara marble, thus playins with the colors contrasts. The frieze in pure, soft-white (Statuary) Carrara is a piece of art, it shows a shield in the center, flanked by bas-and low relied decorations, foilage and chimeras, all carved with details and care. And all in perfect shape. The frame has deep bollection mouldings. The Napoléon III style is highly eclectic, 1852-1870. Instead of finding inspiration of one single period, the designers from the Napoléon III, as well the designers of the second Empire, 1848-1870, created joyful exubernce from all sources. During these twenty years, a resurgence of Renaissance, Louis XV, Louis XVI ànd Gothic styles appeared. The Brèche de Violet is a marble with high standards, used in many important places, like churches in Italy, rooms at the Versailles Palace, the Grand Trianon. It was used for valued fireplaces and luxurious furniture. The dimensions of this fireplace providing an extra impact.
