Object description :

"Jean-frédéric Canepa (1894-1981) The Port Of Cassis"
A solid, almost cubist design, beautiful cheerful and luminous colors for this Port de Cassis by the Marseilles artist Jean-Frédéric Canepa. The work in perfect condition, produced in oil on cardboard, is offered in an elegant modern frame in a plexiglass and American box composition which measures 55.5 cm by 63.5 cm and 33 cm by 41 cm for the painting alone. . It represents the port of Cassis in the 1950s. A very decorative and modern work by this great under-rated artist who was one of the great professors of Fine Arts in Marseille who trained a large part of the artists who make up the Contemporary Provencal School. A brilliant student of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Marseille, where he entered in 1908, he successively won first prizes for Living Model and Decoration, then for Painting. Appointed professor at this same school, his disciples include well-known painters today such as Aicardi, Jean Arène, Georges Briata, Nicole Guieu, Yvette Bonté, Trabuc and Walter. Decorator of many monuments: The Palace of Justice of Marseille, The Town Hall of Noves, The Municipal Casino of Constantine, The Town Hall of Aubagne, The Pavilion of Provence at the Universal Exhibition of 1937, The Chamber of Commerce, the Hall of Meeting of the General Council of the Bouches du Rhône, many schools, ocean liners; Also portraitist of official characters, Canepa is also the author of the illustrations of the Revus Fortunio and the posters of the first films of Marcel Pagnol. The perfection of his drawing pushes him to a very linear vision where the line and the light reconstruct in solid volumes, forms reduced to the essential. Painter in love with Rive Neuve where he kept one of the last traditional workshops for a long time, he has a secret predilection for the Camargue and its rides of herdsmen emerging from a forest of bullfighting horns. While remaining faithful to Provençal floklore, Canepa tries to keep pure an emotion that he always submits to the rules of rigorous writing. The Cantini Museum in Marseille retains "the Gladioli" from him and the Museum of Old Marseille "the Customs Canal" - The Regards de Provence Foundation "the unraveling of the nets".
