In the taste of Juste-Aurèle Messonnier
Pair of rocaille torches
Finely chased and gilded bronze
Dimensions : H. 23 (cm.)
An important pair of candlesticks or torches in the rocaille style. The shaft features an asymmetrical ternary cycle with alternating shell and plant decoration, each side being different. The spigot has a jagged rocaille decoration. The special feature here is the quality of the two-tone gilding: pink and warm gold, which accentuates the burnished and matt surfaces and therefore reflects the light.
An iconic model
This torch was made in the second half of the 19th century, when eclecticism triumphed. It is based on the designs of the great Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier. Architect, draughtsman, goldsmith and ornamentalist, he was one of the greatest theoreticians of French rocaille. His works, created by him, under his direction or freely inspired by his designs, can be found all over the world. Our torch is based on a model made around 1735-1740, due to the asymmetrical nature of the design. A model close to the 18th century in its own way is preserved in New York at the Metropolitan Museum.
