A very decorative piece in the world of rugs, this beautiful Afshar with peacock decoration placed on balusters is from the first part of the 20th century, around 1920-1930, in magnificent condition for an unusual composition.
Afshar rug, (Avshar) also called Sirdjan from the Shahr Babak region, hand-knotted in very good quality wool.
This piece measures 132 cm wide by 198 cm long, in shades of curry, ivory, pink ocher, forest green, orange, and many blues placed on a wine-colored field. The color treatment was made with plants and minerals, proof is, the black parts have no oxidation.
The ornamentation of this piece of great finesse is composed of a rich decoration of stylized flowers and a serene peacock placed on its balustrade, surrounded by a border representing stylized flowers placed in medallions, with halberd tips. .
The blue peafowl is found in the Persian culture.
## Note that Western iconography sometimes depicts the peacock drinking from the Eucharistic chalice. In the Middle East, it is represented alone or on either side of the Tree of Life on prayer rugs: symbols of the incorruptible soul and of the psychic duality of man. Cosmic symbol for Islam: when it makes the wheel, it represents either the universe, or the full moon, or the sun at its zenith. ### A Sufi legend of the golden triangle, probably of Persian origin, says: "God created the Spirit in the form of a peacock and showed him his own image in the mirror of the divine Essence. The peacock was seized with reverent awe and let down drops of sweat from which all other beings were created.
The unfolding of the peacock's tail symbolizes the cosmic unfolding of the Spirit."
The carpet is in very good condition considering its age and has no restoration. The colors are bright and give it a magnificent cachet.
## The Kadjar or Kadjar dynasty: ( Qājār, Qadjar, Qajar, Persian: قاجار ) is a Turkmen dynasty which reigned over Iran from 1786 to 1925. A very beautiful copy which will please the connoisseur, the edges in good condition are in mixed wool, the ends are overlocked, as on many old rugs. In the southeast of Iran, around the city of Kerman, live the semi-nomads of the Afshar tribe, but also in the region of Shiraz.
Pierre Loti, passionate about orientalism, speaks of it in his writings in 1900 (Vers Ispahan) as marvels of motley wool. For a long time, these nomads lived in the north-west of Iran, but part of the population moved to the south-east where the manufacture of carpets represented an important economic sector and this since the middle of the 19th century.
These carpets have shades of pink, red, ocher, many blues, purple and the majority of them bear geometric patterns. The most common design used is a large central field with one or more square medallions.
Some decorations represent the skin of an animal stretched before being tanned.
What is typical of Afshar mats is that they are relatively wide compared to their length. Afshar rugs are also marketed under the name Sirdjan rugs.
A collector's item above all, this piece is a modern work of art that can be put on the wall.
