*Born in 1848 in Noirétable (Loire), died November 11, 1912 in Lyon.
In 1856, his father, a shoemaker, came to settle in Lyon in the Saint-Jean district.
The young Théodore entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon at the age of twelve.
In 1863, at the age of fifteen, he was awarded the school's highest distinction: the Laurier d'Or.
Receiving a scholarship from the City of Lyon, he decided to join the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and lived not far from the School in the 6th arrondissement.
In 1865, he exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris but disappointments led him to abandon the courses of his teachers: the painters Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme.
He was then deprived of the pension that allowed him to live and was forced to return to Lyon.
In 1867, he received a letter from the prefect, announcing to him that given the testimonies received on his repentance and his new good intentions for the future, he would again be entitled to the scholarship allocated the previous year. So he leaves for Paris.
That same year, aged just 19, Théodore accepted the decoration of the Jesuit chapel in Avignon. In three months, he drew and painted 112 life-size saints.
He then left for Marseilles, then embarked for Sicily and Italy where he studied the technique of fresco and perfected himself in the art of painting draperies and silks.
When the Franco-Prussian War broke out, he enlisted and was wounded in the left hand during a battle at Nuits-Saint-Georges.
He would later paint many war scenes. Particularly active from 1874 to 1878, Théodore became a great specialist in realistic painting and practiced in several genres such as landscape, portrait and decorative paintings. In 1893, he joined his brother Léon at the Arche farm in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or to share their common passion in a bucolic setting. His landscapes, often wintry and in halftones, evoke the humid and misty atmosphere of the Lyons waterways, but he also painted seascapes of the Mediterranean coast bathed in sunlight.
