"Goya Y Lucientes Francisco José De (1746-1828) Bullfighting. 24 Prints On 40 "loizelet""
Bullfighting. Collection of 24 of 40 prints representing different ways and feints of the art of fighting bulls, invented and etched in Madrid. Paris: Loizelet. Third edition, enriched compared to the previous ones with 7 plates initially discarded, of this famous complete suite of Bullfighting by Francisco de Goya. The original edition of the suite, which appeared in 1816, comprises 33 plates - the 7 compositions rejected by the artist will also be absent from the second, published in 1855. This third edition, published posthumously in 1876, is the first to reintegrate the 7 plates initially discarded, making it the most complete edition of the suite published until then, with 40 engravings by Goya, numbered in copper at the top right, on laid paper. This series was inspired by the Spanish artist both by his past as a bullfighter and by the book on bullfights published in 1777 by his friend, the poet Nicolas Fernandez de Moratin. However, it was not until some forty years later, in 1815-1816, that Goya undertook a long preparatory work to produce this superb suite in which he notably depicted the prowess of his friend Pedro Romero and the death of Pepe Hillo. However, he is not satisfied with his first attempt. Since the copper plates he uses for engraving are particularly expensive, being imported from England, he has to resolve, for seven of the plates, to turn the plates over and engrave a new composition on the back. There is also the portrait of Goya, drawn and engraved by Eugène Loizelet, also used as the title page of the edition. prints / 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,16,17,18,19,20,22,23,25,26,28,33,B,C,E, portrait of goya black, red goya portrait. ps: 5 framed prints
