Object description :

"Plane Galley Peugeot Brothers XIX."
Rabovarlophilia: Rare 19th century Peugeot Frères curry plane, dugout piece. The use of large planes like this one was rather intended for roughing out structural beams and parquet boards. The physical work required significant effort, hence the need for a 4-handed plane. These were pushed by the craftsman using the 2 side handles and pulled at the same time by another craftsman using the pull bar located at the other end of the plane. The drawbar is the only part of wood independent of the rest of the monoxyl plane to allow easy replacement when it breaks. The tool therefore had to be robust to resist over time. It was therefore necessary to have dense, solid wood, but also homogeneous so as not to split under the blows. It is the wood of service tree (or domestic mountain ash), present here, which was frequently used. Good state of conservation. Length 30 cm, width with handle 21 cm, total height with iron 13.5 cm. Monogrammed on the front and back MFF
-- Emile Peugeot thought, from 1847, to give an image to the brand. The brothers choose the lion as their emblem; it will be designed by Jules Blazer, goldsmith in Montbéliard. The choice of the lion, if it evokes that of the coat of arms of Franche-Comté. The design of the "Lion on arrow", engraved since 1850 on saws, then tools and also household equipment, was deposited at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in 1858. It symbolizes the brand and the success of the metallurgical branch.
