Louis Cabié, renowned artist in France and particularly in the Bordeaux region, even during his lifetime, circulated in the great south-west throughout his life. Pupil of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation is found in the manner of the Barbizon school, he would transcribe the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest atmospheres, places steeped in history, bewitching valleys, or even a landscape in are simpler devices than it will be able to raise from a vital contrast.
From 1890, Louis-Alexandre Cabié crossed the banks of the Vézère in all weathers and in different seasons. It is in the town of Eyzies in Dordogne that he will spend a large part of his time, and where he convolves in second nuptials in 1894. Several hundred works have been produced on the banks of this river, which are for the majority not located today.
Titled “Mists on the Vézère” and “Le matin, la Vézère aux Eyzies”, this view of autumn 1908 transmits the frost that the painter must have felt on the banks of the river. At the foot of the Gorge d'Enfer valley, Cabié turns here towards the village of Eyzies downstream and captures the rising light diffusing in the fog. Equal to himself, the painter represents only what he sees, without adding a whimsical touch, and letting the stream and the atmosphere express themselves.
