The Browsing Stag n°1
Bronze with nuanced brown patina
H.: 37 cm; W.: 38 cm; D.: 17 cm
Signed “PJ MÊNE” on the base
Second half of the 19th century
Created between 1844 and 1846, this model of Browsing Stag is one of the artist's best known. In a peaceful attitude, the animal is treated in a naturalistic way, integrated into a landscape represented by the tree and the naturalistic base. With photographic accuracy, the sculptor manages to render the instantaneousness of movement. The subject existing in three sizes, this is the largest model produced by Pierre-Jules Mêne.
