Object description :

"Roman School. Lazio Landscape. Early 18th Century. Architectual Capriccio With Roman Ruins"
Roman school. Lazio landscape.
Early 18th century.
Architectual Capriccio with Ancient Rome building ruins with arches and a temple to the left with columns and mountains in the distance.
In the foreground are three characters dressed in the traditional way.

Technique: oil on canvas.
Original canvas, restorations and small reinforcements on canvas and pictorial retouches.

The painting is part of the series of 3 paintings of the same size and subject, which we offer for sale separately. One of these paintings is signed Giuseppe Longhi, dated 1718.
We thank Professor Giancarlo Sestieri for confirming the discovery of a painter hitherto unknown to critics, belonging to the Roman school.

We quote his letter here, with the permission of the professor: "They are a useful acquisition for knowing a little more about the diffusion in Rome of the genre of the "Architectural Capriccio" at the beginning of the 18th century before the advent of Panini which, as I foresaw, he did not limit himself to the names of Carlieri and Roberti, from which, more the second than the first, this Longhi seems to have taken up."

So this series of paintings, in addition to being a pleasant, authentic and ancient work of art, is an interesting document and hitherto unknown piece in the panorama of the history of Italian painting at the beginning of the 18th century.
