The Hotel du Cap in Antibes is a very famous palace, which dates from 1872, and was frequented by the greatest personalities of the 20th century. Below you will find the fascinating history of the Coat of Arms. The origins of the coat of arms * Heritage and cultural heritage The 150th anniversary of the establishment was an opportunity for us to rediscover the meaning of the coat of arms of the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc through our archives. The four coats of arms — from top to bottom — represent Italy, Russia, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. The history rich in symbol of the creation of the Hotel is linked to these four countries. Italy During a stay in Cap d'Antibes in 1887, the young hotelier Antoine Sella, originally from Piedmont (Italy), discovered the abandoned Villa Soleil. With his extraordinary vision and his passion for hospitality, Sella decided to buy the hotel, renovate it and turn it into the Grand Hôtel du Cap. This new destination quickly won over an elegant and refined clientele, arriving from all over Europe and the United States. Before dying in 1931, Antoine Sella bequeathed the hotel to his son, André, in 1928. Russia In 1863, Count Paul de Fersen, colonel of the Russian Imperial Army and aide-de-camp to Tsar Alexander II, as well as his English partner James Close, founded the association of owners of Antibes. De Fersen subsequently invested in properties in the region. They both succumbed to tuberculosis in 1865 and it was Alexis de Pletscheyeff, brother-in-law of Count Fersen and former officer of the Russian Imperial Guard who inherited his investments. United Kingdom The Briton James Close and his Russian partner Paul de Fersen founded the association of owners of Antibes with the intention of building roads to access Cap d'Antibes and erecting a commercial building there. Close buys 17,000 m² of land on the cape and plans to build a large villa there, surrounded by 30 luxury residences. The two partners succumbed to tuberculosis in 1865. Switzerland In the hotel industry of the time, this symbol represented a recognized quality label. All the big hotels aspired to reach the Swiss level of excellence for the service and hygiene (particularly important during the tuberculosis epidemic) of their establishment.
