Object description :

"Method Of Making 18th Century Sundials Or Gnomonics"
Interesting book of gnomonia, general method for tracing sundials and computing from the late 18th century. Complete with its 260 pages classified in two chapters: Method for drawing sundials and principles and use of the computer (= calendar of movable feasts). This book is accompanied by a dozen plates, expressing in various geometric designs the art of gnomonia (the plates were often badly folded but they are complete). Tan leather binding, general wear; ribbed spine gilded and also worn. Written by M. de la Prize, former architect and student of the Royal Academy of Paris. Dates from 1780 and 1781, Antoine-J Nicolle printing works, bookstore at Pierre Le Baron in Caen. The book has obviously been used many times but remains in my opinion very complete. A bit of history (thank you Internet): Modern gnomonics, of Arabic origin, developed little by little in Europe from the 15th century. The first works date from the beginning of the 16th century. Among the first authors who published on the subject at the time, we can cite Sebastian Münster in 1531 and Oronce Fine in 1532. It was from the seventeenth century that gnomonics developed in particular by relying on spherical trigonometry which has existed since antiquity. Multiple methods, graphic or analytical, exposed in multiple books have allowed and still allow to realize with more or less precision the sundials adorning the facades and the gardens. delivery: €10 for metropolitan France.
