The Warwick Vase is an enormous Roman marble vase decorated with bacchanalian motifs discovered in the ruins of the Emperor Hadrian's villade around 1771 by Gavin Hamilton Scottish painter and antiquarian in Rome The object was then restored under the supervision of the antiquarian James Byreset advice from Piranèse After the British Museum refused to buy it, the object was sold in 1878 to Georges Greville, second Earl of Warwick, who placed it on the lawn of his castle, before sheltering it in a greenhouse built especially for this purpose. In 1977, it was purchased by the Burell collection, which has exhibited it in Glasgow since 1978.
