Very beautiful canvas by Gustave Vidal representing the transhumance of sheep in Provence, signed lower left + marked on the back on an old label "853- Provençal landscape, sheep". Size without frame 38x46cm. Superb post-impressionist composition by Gustave Vidal who paints here a transhumance of sheep crossing a Provençal village, therefore animated by a flock of sheep and two shepherds surrounded by a farmhouse, a sheepfold and of course cypresses. Provencal atmosphere typical of the painter, just like his way of painting, with large touches applied with a knife, extremely rich in matter, all in a palette of the most subtle in tones of ochres, greens, blues, white... come raised as often a few points of red on the characters. In short, pure Gustave Vidal, inimitable and recognizable at first glance. Painter from Avignon born in 1895, winner of the Beaux Arts d'Avignon where he obtained numerous awards. He participates in Paris, at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he is a member. He mainly paints landscapes of Provence, Camargue and Corsica. He is unquestionably one of the best great Provençal landscape painters of the early 20th century, working alongside painters from the Group of Thirteen such as Claude Firmin, Jules Flour, Joseph Hurard, Alfred Lesbros, Joseph Meissonnier. An excellent colorist, he models the dough with a knife like no one before; like a mason he builds his canvases in three dimensions. This canvas is in very good condition, it has been re-lined for the sake of conversation but has no restoration, it is finally framed in a pretty period gilt frame. Guaranteed authentic work
