Napoleon III Fireplace, Rance Marble, Ca.1875

This is a late nineteenth century (Napoléon III-Belle Epoque), Belgian fireplace-surround, made out of the valued Belgian marble Du Rance.  The moulded shelf rests above a panelled frieze with a central lozenge and cushioned marble panels. Flanked by square endblocks. All is echoed on the jambs. The 'Rouge Du Rance' is a Devonian red limestone from the Belgian Rance région. Google 'Devonian' and you will learn about plants and fishes, ammonites and first life on dry land. The whole story is captured in the Rouge De Rance marble...  This fireplace will be delivered with original old marble-tiles, to make a frontfloor.
