The illustrations of the battles of the 16th century, and the famous "Triumph of Maximilian" show this kind of sword, but they are extremely rare on the market. This one is not from the 16th century: it is a 19th century manufacture in the style of the Renaissance.
BLADE: It is a powerful blade, which after a long ricasso of 30cm takes on a diamond shape.
At the level of the ricasso, two strong lateral fullers surround a richly etched central part.
I chosed to leave the blade with its dark patina, but it is quite possible by manual polishing to give it a much shinier appearance.
Length of the blade: 85 cm, Width near the guard 4.9 cm, thickness near the guard 0.6 cm
GUARD: It is a cross guard, whose quillons are slightly curved towards the blade. Beautiful etching decoration on each side.
POMMEL: It is a flattened disc, decorated with etching, in its center a profile of a knight in armor, and all around rich vegetal decoration, including on the side faces of the pommel.
GRIP : it is covered in leather, with a twisted iron wire binding. The ferrules are made of iron.
This sword model is a rarity. The weapon is a little heavy to be handled easily with one hand (2 kgs) and probably had to be handled with 2 hands, with the left hand at the level of the ricasso, like the large 2-handed swords of the Lansquenets.
The silhouette of this sword brings us back to the 16th century, during the Italian wars, in the footsteps of Bayard, of the constable of La Palisse and king François 1er.
