Bronze Apothecary Mortar With Handles, Early 17th Forez

Superb mortar 16cm diameter, wider than high, cast bronze, with brown patina. Flared in shape, it rests on a small circular base, body with two sockets in shape of animal's head, is punctuated by 6 buttresses , crenellated turrets; the in-betweens are each adorned with one fleur-de-lys surmounted by one sun. The strong upper edge is modeled with stars, 3 comets, and a T.

The beautiful book, (photo) on mortars, very documented, allows, because of the design of turrets, suns, and the assembly of pastillages, allows to see there  hand of one master , 1st part of the 17th century, living in Forez and Livradois, before settling in Burgundy, called since his discovery the Master of  Ramousse bucket.
