"False Pair Of Eger Panels"
A false pair of octagonal reliefs from Eger with depictions of Gaius Mucius Scaevola and Horatius Cocles. Gaius Mucius Scaevola was a figure in early Roman history, said to have saved the city from a siege in 508 BC. Horatius Cocles was a national hero in Roman mythology, who is said to have single-handedly defended a bridge leading to Rome against the Etruscans. Attributed to the Master at Ornate Background; cabinetmaker and marquetry maker from the 17th century, active in Eger and its surroundings. The carved reliefs of Eger are among the most significant and independent contributions to the tradition of marquetry art: carved and inlaid reliefs were a particular form of marquetry that had developed in the town of Cheb (today now part of the Czech Republic).
Very good condition. Eger (G) formerly Cheb, 17th century.
