An identical model is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon Height: 29.5cm Width: 25.5cm Born in Morestel (Isère), 1842 , in the laboratory of Claude Bernard; in Berlin, at Virchow; in Halle, at Wolknmann. After these trips, he returned to Lyon, where he became attached, as a diligent student, to Professor Ollier, whom he followed for many years example and lessons. During the war of 1870, Léon Tripier demonstrated, as chief surgeon of one of the Lyon Ambulances, a dedication which almost cost him his life. Appointed, in 1877, professor of operating medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Lyon; he was one of the organizers of the practical work of this very important branch of medical art. At the end of 1882, finally, the chair of surgical clinic having become vacant, he was promoted there, in the unanimous opinion of his colleagues. The eminent surgeon left considerable work, among which we must especially cite his inaugural thesis on cancer of the spine; his research into recurrent sensitivity and the nerves of the hand; his experiences with tetanus and rickets; his work on the restoration of the face, and remarkable articles in the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Medical Sciences. Léon Tripier was not only a true scholar, a remarkable surgeon, but also an independent and liberal spirit, an artistic soul, an excellent and generous heart. Lyon gave him a funeral worthy of his high moral and scientific value; his name will remain among the most glorious of the great Lyon surgical school.
