Huamanga Relief Of Saint Ferdinand. Ayacucho, Peru, Late 17th Century.

A gilded Huamanga stone relief depicting Saint Ferdinand receiving the keys to Seville.

The relief measures 26 x 20cm. 
 
The relief has been later framed and measures 30 x 24cm.
 
The sculpture narrates the reconquest of Seville by Ferdinand III of Castile in 1248.
 
Ferdinand III stands with his soldiers and a small child before the kneeling Moorish king who presents him with the keys to the city which is visible in the background. Above the Holy Roman Emperor can be seen an apparition of the Virgin and child, a symbol of the Saints divine purpose.

Huamanga stone is a type of white alabaster with delicate transparencies which takes its name from its place of origin, Huamanga, in the Ayacucho region, where production of sculptures and reliefs flourished, usually dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Christ and saints. Similar examples can be found in the Pedro de Osma Museum in Lima.
 
The relief retains traces of its original worn gilding. 
The tip of the top right and bottom right hand corners appear to have been restored.
