In the 1880s, publishing the illustrated catalog of the SAF required artists to send a drawing of the painting they wanted to exhibit, so that an engraver could record this drawing in the catalog. The drawing presented is autograph executed by the painter from his painting. Pupil of Sébastien Cornu and Léon Cogniet at the Beaux Arts in Paris. Grand Prix de Rome in 1864, exhibited at the Salon from 1870, numerous medals, Legion of Honor in 1885. He is a painter of history, genre scenes, portraits, mural compositions, engraver, illustrator. Our drawing is signed lower left: Maillart. The painting was number 1546 of the Salon of 1886. It is a pen on a pencil line, the medals were not all ironed with a pen.
