Japan, late 19th century, superb and unusual gilded pewter cup with relief decoration depicting Kwan Yin, Buddhist goddess of mercy, seated in a position of royal relaxation. Her hairstyle is very elaborate. She wears necklaces and a ceremonial dress. She is surrounded by waves in the background and her head is topped by a phoenix. Good condition except for slight wear, particularly concerning the gilding.Length 18.5 cm. Width 14 cm. The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a brand known to everyone.
