Philippe Swyncop, 1878-1949, Belgian painter of portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Watercolorist, pastelist, designer and poster creator. Impressionist. He was a student of Joseph Stallaert and Constant Montald at the Brussels Academy (1892-1898). He is the older brother of Charles Swyncop. He won the Godecharle Prize in 1900 which allowed him to travel to France and Italy but it was Spain that fascinated him, he stayed there for 12 years. In 1911, at the instigation of King Albert, the Belgian government commissioned him as well as Paul Mathieu, Alfred Bastien and Armand Apol to build a Panorama of the Congo intended for the Universal Exhibition in Ghent of 1913. Before 1924, he paints almost exclusively portraits. A virtuoso of drawing and color, he painted numerous southern beauties. Illustrator of literary works, he was also a good caricaturist. Member of the “Le Sillon” Circle, he exhibited in Brussels. Works at the Museums of Antwerp, Brussels and Louvain. Artist listed in Bénézit, Arto and Piron, listed Artprice, Artnet, Mayer, Akoun....
