Barely out of the Rennes School of Fine Arts, Jean-Charles In 1981, Blais participated in the exhibition Finir en belle with the critic Bernard Lamarche-Vadel, who brought together the future leading figures of the Free Figuration movement. In 1982 the CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain de Bordeaux organized his first personal exhibition and in 1984, he was presented in New York by Léo Castelli. Considered the new guard of French painting, he asserts “My painting is without intention”. Through recycled materials, the artist questions the condition of man.

From 1982, he most often painted on torn posters, and played on the irregular and thick surfaces guiding the artist in the inscription of his characters. The defects of the support determine its compositions. The characters represented are big men wishing to escape from the pictorial space. Most often, the faces are hidden, accentuating the weight of the bodies, represented as masses losing their bearings.
