"Louis Le Bail (1866–1942) "the Haystacks Evening Effect" Post-impressionist Fauve, Mayen"
Quite rare and superb oil/cardboard by Louis Le Bail representing haystacks in the evening, signed lower left + titled on the back "Haystacks, evening effect" Format without frame 24x33cm and 34x42cm including frame. Magnificent post-impressionist composition with a Fauve tendency by Louis Le Bail who here paints haystacks in a golden late evening light; Le Bail painted this work during his mature period, he then used large flat areas and began to slightly stylize his motifs, which he did more and more over the years, in particular by surrounding his subject. His palette is very subtle thanks to shades of greens, oranges, mauves, yellows etc... Le Bail's first works will be impressionist, even divisionist, then later we feel an enormous influence from Cézanne as we can see in this table. Louis Le Bail, is a painter born in Mayenne where he painted numerous landscapes, he also went to Normandy and the North. It belongs to the artistic style of naturalism; landscape is his favorite subject. He was strongly influenced by the Impressionists and by the precursor of Post-Impressionism, Cézanne. He exhibited landscapes at the Salon des Indépendants from 1905 then at the Salon d'Automne and des Tuileries. It is present in Bénézit, also in Gérald Schurr, 1820-1920, the Little Masters of painting: value of tomorrow, Éditions de l'Amateur, 1982, p. 121. Today his works are rather rare on the art market.
